How Country Music Changed My Life

August marks one year since I fell in love with country music.

Growing up, I never really cared for it. I didn’t understand it, and I preferred singing along with the Spice Girls, Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson, etc.

As I got older, I started liking R&B and Hip-Hop too. I enjoyed a country song here and there, but it was never the first type of music I would turn to.

Then I went to Louisiana for the first time.

There was something about being away from the hustle and bustle of the city that changed my perspective. Something about being at the Dallas Love Field Airport and seeing cowboy boots and hats everywhere. Something about exploring and discovering towns that I had never been to before.

I had never been to the south before even though I have family from there. So, I jumped at the chance to visit my grandma in her hometown of Shreveport, Louisiana.

It wasn’t until the drive back to Dallas Love Field from Shreveport that I was enlightened.

I sat in the backseat of the car, looking out the window at the beautiful trees and countryside and listening to music that made me feel so relaxed and happy. I had never truly listened to country music until then.

Country music has now changed my overall mentality.

It’s what I turn to when I’m stressed, frustrated, upset, or overwhelmed. I sing along to it in the shower and in the car. When I feel the need to see the bigger picture about any situation, country music is what I’ll put on.

You may be thinking that I sound crazy. How can something so simple change my outlook on life?

I know that country music isn’t for everyone. But country music is not what this is about.

Keeping an Open Mind

My newfound love and need for country music has made me see that any ordinary moment can become extraordinary. The only thing needed is an open mind.

I wouldn’t have enjoyed myself on that long car ride if I constantly thought to myself how much I wished I would rather be listening to something else. I allowed myself to take in the moment. The lyrics, the music, the scenery, the family I was surrounded with. My open mind allowed me to see a whole new side to music and life in general.

I was excited to see family and an area of the country I had never been to before. But I had no idea the trip would turn into an experience that would impact me forever. I see the world differently. And I now know how I can control my mentality when I feel overwhelmed.

Taking Advantage of Life’s Opportunities

It’s crazy what can happen when we stop closing ourselves off to certain people, places, or things. Unseen opportunities are all around you. Don’t block them out.

An amazing experience can happen anywhere at any time. Try not to speed through life. Literally take some time to stop and smell the roses. Anytime we can add to the list of things that make us happy is a wonderful addition to our lives. Sometimes we focus too much on what we don’t like and what we need to stay away from. But where does that leave us?

Try making the conscious decision to find all the positivity in your life. When you give each moment the opportunity, who knows what will become a life-changing experience.
